RV Tips for Holding Tanks

Today we're going to talk about RV holding tanks. To start with, I wanted to mention something about RV holding tanks that I do not think a lot of RVers are aware of. Many of the free dump stations available to RVers are closing because of chemicals that are harmful to septic systems and because RVers are abusing these dump stations. If we want to have access to these dump stations it is absolutely essential that we use septic safe chemicals (no formaldehyde), and that we clean up after ourselves and do not abuse dump stations.

Your RV has what is referred to as a gray water holding tank and a black water holding tank. The gray water holding tank collects dirty water from the kitchen sink, bathroom sink and shower. The black water holding tank is for the toilet. These tanks terminate into one main outlet used to empty the holding tanks. This is where we connect our sewer hose.

Make sure you have the required couplings and connectors. It may be necessary to attach two hoses together to reach the sewer connection. I recommend you only use heavy duty sewer hoses. Their not that expensive and they hold up much better. Keep a 10 foot hose and a 20 foot hose available. Do not pull or drag the sewer hose on the ground. This will cause it to tear or get pin holes in it.

To hook up the sewer hose make sure both valves are closed and remove the sewer cap. Make the connection by putting the hose adapter over the outlet and turn it clockwise until it locks securely in place. Take the other end of the hose over to the campground sewer connection. Use the necessary adapters to make the connection and get a good seal. It's a good idea to place some weight over the hose so it does not jump back out when you drain the tanks. It may be necessary to use some type of sewer hose support to get a good angle from the RV to the campground sewer connection so the tanks drain properly when you empty them. The small valve is for the gray water tank and the large valve is for the black water tank.

One golden rule for RV holding tanks is to never dump the black water tank until it is at least two thirds full. You want the tank nearly full so the weight and the gravity will force the contents of the tank to drain properly. Another golden rule is to never leave the black tank valve open at the campground and expect the toilet to drain or flush like the toilet in your home. It will not work.

When the tanks are full, or nearly full always dump the black tank first, followed by the gray tank. The gray water tank should also be at least two thirds full. Dumping the gray water tank last will help to flush the sewer hose out.

When you're at the campground for an extended period of time you can leave the gray tank valve partially open so it drains as you use it, but remember to NEVER do this with the black tank. If it's time to leave the campground and your holding tanks are not full you can finish filling them with water and then dump them. Never use your drinking water hose for holding tank maintenance or cleaning purposes. RV drinking hoses are normally white. Take a different color hose for others uses so you can distinguish the difference.

After you dump the tanks you need to thoroughly flush the tanks out. Some RVs have a built in system for flushing the tanks out. If not there are other ways to do it. You can use a tank wand designed for cleaning and flushing the black tank. The only problem is you do not know when or if the black tank is really clean and you can not rinse or clean the gray tank with a wand. I use a product called the Flush King. It's a reverse flush valve that connects directly to your sewer outlet and rinses and cleans both holding tanks in one simple operation. It's easy to use and it has a see through barrel so you know when the tanks are really clean.

Every time you dump the black tank you need to treat it with holding tank chemicals to assist in controlling odors and to break down solids. You should always use environmentally safe chemicals. Enzyme based chemicals use the good bacteria to digest waste and control odors. Formaldehyde based chemicals destroy the bacteria that's needed to break down waste and they can be dangerous to humans and pets.

The first step is to add enough water to completely cover the bottom of the tank. Four or five toilet bowls full should be sufficient depending on the size of your black tank. Water will assist a great deal with controlling holding tank odors. You always want the contents of the tank to be covered by water. Next, fill the toilet bowl and add the proper amount of holding tank chemicals, usually four ounces for every forty gallons the tank holds. Flush the toilet. Repeat this procedure every time you empty the black water holding tank. Some holding tank chemicals like RV Trine also contains valve lubricants to keep the valves operating properly and extend the valve seals life.

You should always use toilet paper designed for use in RVs. This toilet paper breaks down and dissolves in the holding tank chemicals preventing potential problems with the holding tank, the RV sewer system and the dump station septic system.
False holding tank readings on your monitor panel are caused by the holding tank probes being covered by toilet tissue or other debris. If flushing the tank does not solve the problem add some water and a couple bags of ice cubes to the empty holding tank. Drive or pull the trailer so the ice cubes can scrub the sides of the tank. Proper holding tank chemicals will also keep the holding tank probes clean.

Over time grease and residue builds up in the gray tank and it causes a foul odor, not to mention how it is affecting the tank and valve assembly. Periodically treat the gray tank with environmentally safe holding tank chemicals to avoid odors from the tank. When the tank is empty you can also add some dish washing liquid down the drains to help break down grease and residue build up.

Following these simple holding tank tips can prevent problems and provide you with long lasting trouble free holding tanks. This is one problem we can all do without! All of our RV walk-through videos cover information on RV holding tanks, the water system, LP gas system, electrical system and more. Check out our new "RV Essential Items" DVD to show you what items you will want for your RV to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable.

Contingent Project Management – A Definition

In an IT systems context, contingent project management (“CPM”) is the ability to select an appropriate methodology to apply to and successfully deliver a project, tuning the method as the project proceeds. ‘Contingent Leadership Style’ is analogous. Wikipedia (Fiedler) provides an explanation of contingent leadership.

Yes, a project manager can have a contingent leadership style, but may not have a contingent project management approach.

Let us look at a range of project management framework processes:

Waterfall (gather requirements, design, build, test, deliver, train) – the ‘traditional’ way of building systems. This worked well for systems where the rate of business and technology change was low, having grown out of engineering and construction. It still works well in a construction (civil engineering) context, where generally, the rate of technology change is low. Requirements of a building may change during construction, but the rate of scope creep is still low as compared with many IT projects. In the right circumstances, it can still work well with IT projects.

Agile methods (gather and prioritise requirements, design a prototype, test, deliver, re-cycle – design, build, test, deliver, train and go live). On the scale of low risk/low complexity to high risk/high complexity some of the methodologies would be: XP, Scrum, DSDM ®, RUP ®. Note that risk and complexity do not always equate – some low complexity systems can have profound organisational risk associated with them.

Prince ® could be used in either of these contexts for governance of the project on a wider organisational scale, or locally on a smaller scale. Indeed, the advent of Prince2 moved the methodology into a wider non-IT specific context.

Agile methodologies are most appropriate for example where requirements are unclear at the outset, and/or the technology is new or being stretched, and/or a new business model is being adopted (to name just a few reasons). The range of Agile methods also relate to scale of project and team size.

Sophisticated organisations may have their own ‘pet’ methodology, maybe having invested heavily (financially, managerially and politically) in developing their way of doing things, even ‘branding’ the methodology. After all this investment, they will want to ‘sweat this asset’. Projects will have to fit into the corset they impose – this can cause strangulation at the extreme, building a high probability of failure into a project, even before it is initiated.

After all, Prince ® was developed in the UK Public Sector (and the UK Government still has massive problems delivering projects). At the top end of projects, Prince is often seen as excessivley bureaucratic, but it shouldn’t be like that. CPM should ensure that the appropriate processes are selected for a project and that they are applied judiciously so that the project is not strangled by administration and red-tape.

This choking of projects by heavy methods was observed by the author in an investment bank. The project managers running a large number of smaller projects were unable to meet the centralised project reporting requirements imposed on them, leading to frustration in the managers, frustration in the programme office, and frustration in and with the ‘methodology police’. The recommended solution was to

- Prioritise the projects according to risk (measured on several dimensions), report project status on an ‘exceptions’ basis, and tune reporting frequency to project risk.

This levelled the project managers’ workload, and the centralised need for control of risk and comfort.

So, what of contingent project management?

It is clear that a significant degree of experience is necessary to be able to select the appropriate methodology for a project, and the programme board is not always best placed to decide for reasons mentioned earlier – investment and political capital for example.

An effective project manager will have

- the wisdom and experience to select the correct tool for the job based on his or her perception of the risk profile; the ability to persuade the programme board or sponsor of the relevance of the methodology and the basis of selection; worked with a number of methodologies experience enabling the ‘heavy’ or ‘light’ touch application of a methodology; an innate sense of the risks and their relative salience, meaning that a focus is developed and maintained on the things that matter; finally, the ability to dynamically tune the methodology to circumstances without loss of control (finance, timeline and quality), as the ‘things that matter’ change

Dynamic tuning means applying the tool judiciously – some projects may require very high levels of stakeholder communication, others will have to be highly focused on technology/ performance and proof of concept, others may have political governance issues, new or immature business models, and so on. Some projects, of course, will exhibit all of these risks and more beyond. This list and balance of risks will change significantly during the lifecycle of the project. In addition to ongoing Risk review, CPM requires ongoing process review and change.

How is it that more than 30% of projects fail? It is because failing projects continue in the same old vein, without contingent project management being deployed and the management not responding appropriately to changes in risks.

Contingent Project Management is really straightfoward in principle: adapt and survive – that is, Darwinism. To apply it successfully requires a great deal of experience and flexibility.

7 Things to Digest Before You Work From Home

Before you jump into a work at home program you should consider the following:

There a lot of pitch pages that will urge you to buy and paint a very pretty picture such as, “make a six figure income working only 30min”. Do not fall prey to over hyped scams. This is not to say that all the programs you come across will be scams but there are a lot of them out there. Yes getting a great deal on a great product is well, great but you won’t know if it a great if unless you do your research.

What are other people saying about this program or product? Is there someone you can contact for more information, is there more than one way to contact them? A reputable work at home program offers more than just a program they should give support. You need to know as much as you can before you jump into a work from home program. This may become your business. You will need to know it inside out in order to be successful at it.

If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. A lot of times people assume hat because it is the internet you do not need to actually work. Some work from home opportunities suggest that you will make a six figure income for doing next to nothing. If you ever see a work from home program that say’s

anything about you being a millionaire, in no time, without doing any work, turn away, it’s a scam.

The bottom line is online and offline businesses are not that different. People have to be buying your product or service or else you don’t make money. You could never set up shop somewhere offline and expect to make six figures a week without putting in the hours, advertising and promoting your business, giving good customer service, seeking new customers and looking for ways to stay ahead of the competition. What makes you think this is possible with an online work from home program.

You don’t want to reinvent the wheel when you are a complete novice. The internet is a fast paced instrument. Moving too far from what everyone else is doing can cost you profits. That’s why starting up with a work from home program that already has all the tools you need is ideal.

However, you generally are looking to work from home so you can be your own boss, have flexible hours and spend more time with your family. If your work from home program has you making someone else a lot of money but you’re not seeing a dime or if you are spending less time with your family than you hoped for, you may want to rethink working with them. Working from home can feel like another day

job if the program doesn’t offer you the support you need.

There are a lot of free programs out there and many of them are credible and effective for generating an income from home. However, you need to dispel the myth that you can make it online without investing some money. It takes money to make it. This is not to say that you have to fork over a lot of cash in order to be successful but you do need to keep in mind that at some point you will have to spend some money if you truly want to work from home.

Working from home is a great solution for many people. As long as you do your research before joining a program and keep in mind that you will have to work at it if you want to be successful, working from home really can be the best ways to generate an income.
